The problem with audio on the net is simply bandwith. Currently Java only supports the AU audio format
sampled at 8,000 hz in monoaural. This is just about the audio quality of a standard telephone.
The process of getting a good audio master recording squeezed into a Java audio file requires
a great deal of experience in Audio mixing and several pieces of good audio software in order to
properly equalize, sample and filter the recording so that it sounds reasonably good when played on-line
in Java.
An additional difficulty is the relatively slow download time required of audio files. (You thought
large, hi-res graphics was slow.) At 28.8 kbs modem speed, it requires about one minute of
download for each 30 seconds of play time.
