About this Webcam

Our webcam is located in the Sunny Slope community of Ruidoso, New Mexico, near latitude 33.3773, longitude -105.6572. The webcam is pointed east across the canyon of the White Mountain Meadows.

We are using a Logitech 9000 Pro webcam. The snapshots are captured at a resolution of 960x720 pixels at an interval of 5 minutes during daylight hours.

The webcam is located indoors facing out a east window near ground level. In the frame of each image you will see a support column for the covered patio. Just beyond the two large pine trees, about 30 feet from the camera the terrain drops into the White Mountain Meadows canyon. The next set of trees is across the canyon, about a quarter-mile away. Any clouds that may appear over the far ridge may actually be near Roswell, NM or even as far as the New Mexico/Texas border. Occasionally we can see lighting in high cumulus clouds as far as the Texas border as we look above the ridgeline to the East.

The three tanks that appear in the foreground, along the fence contain water for our small friends that visit us on occasion.

Additional graphic processing is performed to enhance the images and prepare the final size of 600x450 pixels that you see on the webcam page. The software to capture the webcam still image at periodic intervals and process the image file has been created as a custom application by wcm Solutions, Inc. (www.wcmsolutions.com)

The webcam has been set to automatically adjust for lighting conditions, which explains the exposure variations during the day. Since the camera is pointed to the east, the relative position of the sun during the afternoon and evening hours will cast a long shadow across the canyon. The best images will appear when the sun is occluded by clouds or in the evening twilight. As we all know, stark shadows wreak havoc in photography.

In the evening hours (~6-8:00 pm Mountain Time) you may catch a glimpse of a few of the wild deer that may be grazing in view of the camera.
