Coyotes Tracks

A Permanent Trail

The Canyon Creek home subdivision is located in far Northwest Austin, Texas not far from Lake Travis, just off of highway 620, along Boulder Lane. This housing area is only a few years old and was carved out of a deep undergrowth of oak trees and scrub cedar brush. Permanent Coyote trail in Canyon Creek

Recently the subdivision has been expanded and the main development street extended through about a mile of rather wild, natural land. Low and behold, while creating the sidewalks on this main street the developers captured a set of permanent coyote tracks encased in the fresh, wet pavement.

Coyotes tend to cover their rather large territories (often 25 square miles) by traveling in open, clear spaces. As it turns out the newly created road clearing is a perfect 'trail' for the coyotes visiting the Canyon Creek neighborhood hunting for prey.

Just as an archaeologist you can easily explore the perfectly preserved coyote tracks along Boulder Lane, west of Indigo Brush Drive. You will find tracks on the north sidewalk at the bridge-like structure covering a drainage ditch between Indigo Brush Drive and Aire Libre Drive on Bolder Lane. Additional tracks can also be located about a quarter of a mile west of these first tracks on the south sidewalk along the same road. Almost as if following the rules of the road, the coyote tracks are west bound on the north side of the road and east bound on the opposite side.

This appears to be the tracks of more than one coyote as the measurements of the imprints are of different sizes.

If you have a chance to visit this area, then be sure to compare the tracks that you see to those on the front page of this site: "Coyotes & Kitty Cats".
