Closeup of Coyote Tracks
Overlaid front and rear Coyote paw tracks

The photos on this page came from the coyote trail encased in the Canyon Creek sidewalk in Northwest Austin. These are classic Coyote tracks.

Compare these tracks with the drawings on the front page and consider the following identifying characteristics.

  • The front paw track is larger (and often heavier imprinted) than the rear.
  • The paw pads of the front paw appear to frown, while the rear paw pad leave a more rounded or lip shaped impression.
  • The placement of the front a rear prints appear somewhat close together.

The photo on the right clearly shows the overprinting of the front and rear paws of a coyote in full lope. These almost appear as a set of tracks from a strange two-legged creature. The coyote's thin legs are close together and great efficiency is gained in overlaying the front and rear paws while the coyote is in full stride (especially in deep snow).
